QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Everything you need to know about housing, work, and getting involved.

🏠 Housing & Living

Who can live at The Sanctuary?

We primarily serve formerly incarcerated individuals and those at risk of homelessness who are 18+ and committed to rebuilding their lives. You don't need a perfect record—you need willingness to work, participate in community, and follow our code of conduct (no violence, theft, or substance use on premises).

How long can I stay?

Our program is designed as transitional housing with stays typically ranging from 6 to 18 months. The exact length depends on your progress toward goals—securing stable employment, building savings, and finding permanent housing. We don't rush you out, and we don't let you stagnate.

What are the living arrangements?

Residents share rooms (typically 2-3 people per room) in a communal house. Everyone has access to:

  • Fully equipped kitchen and dining area
  • Shared bathrooms
  • Common living spaces
  • Outdoor/garden space
  • Computer/internet access
  • Laundry facilities

Private rooms may be available based on seniority and specific needs.

Is there a curfew?

We have reasonable expectations, not prison rules. Residents must check in by 11 PM on weeknights and 1 AM on weekends unless they have overnight work. This is for everyone's safety and to maintain community trust. Exceptions are made for work schedules.

Can I have visitors?

Yes, with reasonable boundaries. Visitors are welcome in common areas during daytime hours (9 AM - 9 PM). Overnight guests are not permitted. All visitors must be approved by staff and sign in. We reserve the right to deny visitors who threaten community safety.

What happens if I break the rules?

It depends on the severity. Minor issues (messiness, being late) result in conversations and check-ins. Major violations (theft, violence, bringing drugs into the house) result in immediate removal—we have to protect the safety of everyone in the community.

We believe in accountability, not punishment. If you're struggling, talk to us before things escalate.

đź’Ľ Work & Micro-Businesses

What kind of work will I be doing?

We operate two main micro-businesses that generate immediate income:

  • Pallet Resale: We buy customer return pallets from retailers, sort the items, and resell them on eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Mercari
  • Sanctuary Scoopers: A pet waste removal service for residential and commercial clients

Participants learn inventory management, customer service, digital marketing, and business operations while earning immediate income.

How much can I earn?

Earnings vary based on hours worked and business performance, but participants typically earn $200-600/week within their first month. As you gain skills and take on more responsibility, income increases. All earnings are yours—we don't take a cut of your wages.

Do I have to work in the micro-businesses?

Participation in micro-businesses is required during your first 30-60 days. This serves multiple purposes: immediate income, skill building, and community bonding. After that period, if you secure outside employment, you can transition to working your own job while still contributing to house maintenance and community activities.

Can I work outside the Sanctuary?

Absolutely—we encourage it! The micro-businesses are designed to provide immediate income while you search for or build toward external employment. Many participants work both (micro-business part-time + outside job) to maximize earnings and savings.

Will you help me find a job?

Yes. We provide:

  • Resume writing assistance
  • Job search strategy
  • Interview preparation
  • Connections to second-chance employers
  • Professional clothing for interviews
  • Transportation assistance to interviews

âś… Eligibility & Application

Do I need to be formerly incarcerated to apply?

No. While our primary mission is serving formerly incarcerated individuals, we also accept applicants who are experiencing homelessness or housing instability, especially those with criminal justice system involvement (probation, parole, pending cases). Each application is reviewed individually.

What if I'm still on probation or parole?

Being on probation or parole does not disqualify you—we expect most of our residents will be. We work with your PO to ensure compliance and can provide documentation of your residence and employment. We've found that stable housing and work actually makes probation/parole easier to complete successfully.

How long is the waitlist?

Currently 2-3 weeks, though this varies based on bed availability. We review applications within 48 hours and will be transparent about timing. If you're in immediate crisis (unsheltered, domestic violence), let us know and we'll try to connect you with emergency resources while you wait.

Is there an application fee?

No. Applying is completely free. We will never ask you for money to join our program.

What documents do I need?

To complete the application, you'll need:

  • Government-issued ID (or we can help you get one)
  • Social Security card or proof of SSN
  • Proof of income (if any)
  • Release paperwork (if recently incarcerated)

If you're missing documents, we can help you obtain them—don't let that stop you from applying.

🤝 Partnerships & Volunteers

Can I volunteer at The Sanctuary?

Yes! We need volunteers for:

  • Mentorship (professional skills, life skills)
  • Tutoring (GED prep, computer skills)
  • Meal preparation
  • Facility maintenance and repairs
  • Administrative support
  • Event planning and fundraising

All volunteers undergo a background check and orientation. Email us to get started.

Can my business partner with you?

Absolutely! We're looking for business partners who can:

  • Hire our participants (second-chance employment)
  • Donate pallets or surplus inventory for our resale business
  • Provide pro bono services (legal, accounting, marketing)
  • Sponsor events or programs
  • Offer job shadowing or internships

Contact our partnerships team to explore opportunities.

Do you work with other organizations?

Yes, collaboration is central to our model. We partner with:

  • SC Department of Corrections (reentry services)
  • Local probation and parole offices
  • Workforce development boards
  • Legal aid organizations
  • Mental health and substance abuse providers
  • Housing authorities

If your organization serves our population, let's talk about referrals and collaboration.
